The Royal Highland Festival is an annual celebration held in Laya village, Gasa District, Bhutan, situated at approximately 3,820 meters above sea level. Established in 2016 under the guidance of His Majesty the King, the festival aims to promote and preserve the unique culture and traditions of Bhutan’s highland communities. Laya, located within the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park, offers visitors breathtaking views of mountains, lakes, and springs, making it a popular destination for cultural and ecotourism.

The festival features a variety of attractions, including traditional mask dances, horse riding, yak riding, and local age-old dances. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the vibrant culture of the Layap people, known for their distinctive attire and customs. The event also showcases local products such as yak-based goods, highland agricultural produce, and medicinal herbs, reflecting the community’s sustainable lifestyle.

In line with Bhutan’s “high-value, low-volume” tourism policy and the principles of Gross National Happiness, the festival emphasizes responsible travel that preserves the environment and culture. The local administration actively involves the community in organizing the event, managing homestays, and providing porter services. These initiatives offer visitors an immersive experience while supporting the socio-economic well-being of the Layap people, who primarily rely on yak and horse rearing for their livelihood.

Access to Laya is achieved through a two-day trek from Gasa, offering travelers a chance to traverse Bhutan’s pristine landscapes and engage with one of its most remote communities. More!
