The Bhutan Bird Festival is held every November in Tingtibi, Zhemgang District in central Bhutan. This vibrant celebration highlights Bhutan’s commitment to nature conservation and sustainable eco-tourism while supporting local communities. Zhemgang’s 94.7% forest coverage provides the perfect backdrop, home to over 357 bird species, including the critically endangered White-Bellied Heron (WBH).
A key highlight of the bird festival is its community-led model. Held on a 3.7-acre site, locals from all eight gewogs of Zhemgang collaborate to build sustainable wooden structures, including:
Educational stalls featuring local bamboo and woodcraft
Food exhibitions showcasing indigenous produce
A permanent cultural stage for traditional performances
This participatory approach ensures the festival uplifts local livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage.
The bird festival promotes eco-tourism in Bhutan through guided birding trails like:
Zhemgang to Tingtibi (36 km)
Panbang to Tingtibi (75 km)
Nature enthusiasts can also join unique events like the Birdathon and Best Bird Photographer competition, drawing participants from around the country.
For thrill-seekers, the festival offers adventure races:
21 km run for men (aged 34 and under)
18 km run for women (all ages)
Special category for men above 35
Adding to the festival’s charm are local horse riders, trained specially for this event, who showcase their skills while promoting equine traditions in the region.
